The needs of older persons undergoing heart surgery: unveiling a nursing intervention through focus groups

Abstract Background The progressive ageing of the population, prevalence chronic diseases, such as cardiovascular diseases and heart disease with surgical indication, have a significant expression, either curative objective or to increase quality life. Waiting for surgery is often period anxiety fear. Preoperative waiting time can be used better prepare these patients surgery. Purpose purpose this research was identify needs older people Methods A qualitative exploratory approach gain an understanding participants' perception what are persons Focus Groups were collect information. Three interviews conducted with: group nurses experience in cardiothoracic care, individuals submitted (≥65 years) years); enrolling up 17 participants from October 2019 January 2020. Qualitative data analysis using interactive model, at first similar chunks categorized by codes, allowing further data. Condensing enabled us retrieve most material, condensing it into smaller number categories. MaxQDA software, EQUATOR COREQ guidelines followed. Results categories emerged: (i) Information focused on facilitating health promotion self-care, information regarding hospital stay granting access information; (ii) Emotional support described patient's feelings towards upcoming need keep them calm, involving their families caregivers; (iii) Access should kept involved engaged managing self-care. Conclusion preoperative intervention necessary education provided patients' needs.
